According to the Energy Storage Application Branch of the China Chemical and Physical Power Supply Industry Association, as of the end of 2022, the cumulative installed power of energy storage projects in China has reached 66.493GW. The cumulative installed power of Pumped-storage hydroelectricity is 54.715GW, accounting for 82.29%; The cumulative operational scale of electrochemical energy storage projects is 10.78GW, accounting for 16.21%; The cumulative operating scale of cold/heat storage projects is 531.2MW, accounting for 0.80%; Other technical energy storage projects (mainly Flywheel energy storage, compressed air and super capacitor) have a total cumulative installed power of 465.9MW, accounting for 0.70%. From January to April 2023, a total of 77 new energy storage projects (2.535GW) and 3 pumped storage projects (900MW) were put into operation, totaling 3.435GW.

The National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration issued the Opinions on Improving the Energy Green and Low Carbon Transformation System, Mechanism and Policy Measures (FGNY [2022] No. 206), pointing out that it supports user side adjustable resources such as user side energy storage, electric vehicle charging facilities, distributed generation, as well as load aggregators, Virtual power plant operators, integrated energy service providers, etc. to participate in direct power purchase transactions and system operation regulation.
