July was the busiest month of the year for planning and approval of large-scale battery energy storage systems in the UK , with the total scale of approved projects exceeding 5GW/10GWh .
The data comes from Solar Media's market research report, "UK Battery Energy Storage: Under Construction and Completed Asset Database." The report shows that during July , local governments and other planning bodies approved the construction of grid-scale battery energy storage systems totaling 5,044MW and 10,488MWh .
This brings the total number of approved projects in the UK ( including projects under construction, excluding those already in operation ) to 68,915MW/143,678MWh . Signature projects approved include Lightrock Power 's 600MW Stable Green Energy project, Root-Power 's 50MW/100MWh Lucky Star project, as well as ESB , RES , and Renewable Connections projects .
The approval of these projects resulted in a significant decrease in the total pipeline of projects under review: from 36,193 MW/74,897 MWh at the end of June to 32,535 MW/67,082 MWh at the end of July . This figure continued to climb through 2025 , reaching 27,868 MW/56,588 MWh at the beginning of the year .
The UK clean energy market is currently undergoing major reforms to its grid connection queuing mechanism, requiring developers to submit materials proving their projects are " ready and necessary " , with obtaining planning permission being a key requirement.
July saw relatively few new projects commissioned, with 35MW/70MWh of capacity added. This brought the UK’s total operational energy storage capacity past the 10GWh mark, now reaching 6,987MW/10,204MWh.
