Energy Vault (NRGV), an international energy storage solutions company, recently announced an agreement with Consumers Energy, Michigan’s largest energy provider, to provide two battery energy storage systems (BESS) with a total capacity of 75MW/300MWh in Esco and Bay counties, Michigan. This partnership marks Energy Vault’s official entry into the utility market in the eastern United States.
The two battery energy storage systems are understood to have different locations. The 45 MW/180 MWh Weedock battery energy storage system will be located at the site of the decommissioned John C. Weedock Power Plant in Hampton Township, while the 30 MW/120 MWh battery energy storage system will be located in Oscardale Township. Local approvals are currently being actively coordinated with township officials, paving the way for the project development.
Battery deliveries are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025, construction will begin in the first quarter of 2026, and commercial operations are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026. Once operational, the two systems will charge and discharge daily, dispatching stored renewable energy during peak hours, effectively alleviating energy supply and demand pressures in Michigan.
Notably, these two battery energy storage systems will be developed based on Energy Vault's B-VAULT™ fully integrated battery energy storage solution. Leveraging the company's proprietary X-Vault integration platform and Vault-OS energy management system, these systems will enable precise control, management, and optimization of system operations, providing superior energy management capabilities.
At the same time, the company's innovative system architecture also provides customers with a choice of battery and inverter suppliers, and the unique AC coupling and DC coupling configurations can flexibly adapt to various project requirements.
This collaboration is another step forward in Energy Vault's continued expansion into the global battery energy storage market. The company's B-VAULT portfolio now boasts over 2GWh of projects deployed or under development.
